Million persons visit this statue of bronze every year in Arlington, Virginia. Yes, it is the same city that that of the national cemetery, in fact, is crossing the road that divides them. But, what has of special this statue?, what value has it for the Americans?.

For starting, it´s the tallest brass in the world. The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial consist of the famous statue of the marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima at Mount Suribachi. For it, it´s also called Iwo Jima memorial. It was dedicated in 1954.

As curiosity, there are twelve hands in the memorial corresponding to the six figures represented. However, there is a rumor which has attributed the existence of a thirteenth hand to the sculptor's wish to symbolize either all the other Marines who made the flag raising possible, or the hand of God. When informed of the rumor, Weldon exclaimed, "Thirteen hands. Who needed 13 hands? Twelve were enough."
