Es una celebración mundial con el objetivo de fomentar la lectura, la industria editorial y la propiedad intelectual por medio de los derechos del autor. A nivel internacional es promocionado por la UNESCO y su primer año fue en el 1995. Actuamente, se festeja en un centenar de países, entre ellos, España.
En 2001, la UNESCO eligió a Madrid, Capital mundial del Libro. Desde entonces, cada 23 de abril varias ciudades han ido acogiendo dicho título. Este año, Buenos Aires recibe este título hasta el siguiente 23 de abril, que lo hará Erévan (Armenia). En Barcelona, la otra gran ciudad de España, se celebra el día de San Jordi, en el que las parejas y las personas queridas, se regalan un libro y una rosa.
A los que nos gusta mucho leer, es un gran problema ir a los mercadillos que se forman en las ciudades para conmemorar este día porque al haber tantos libros cuesta mucho eslegir sólo uno. Además, es una gran oportunidad para conocer, sobre todo, en Madrid, a nuestros escritores favoritos que estarán firmando sus libros.
En los últimos años, la fiesta se ha extendido durante una semana ,o incluso, un mes porque organizan eventos relacionados con los libros. La ciudad que recibe el anterior título tendrá eventos literarios para celebrarlo todo el año.
