Es la clase de yacimiento arqueológico que nadie podría inventar. Colibríes, monos. arañas y otras figuras gigantes, unos 800 geogíficos grabados hace 2000 años en el desierto peruano. Pero lo más misterioso es que desde el suelo tiene el áspecto de un tramo anodino de tierra rojiza, sólo se pueden apreciar desde el cielo.

But the most mysterious is that from the ground has the appearance of a nondescript stretch of red dirt, you can only see from the sky.

Su descubridor fue Pedro Cieza de León en 1547 que vió "señales en algunas partes del desierto que circunda Nazca", aunque la ciencia no las descubriría hasta que el hombre comenzara a volar. En 1994, el Comité de la UNESCO lo declaró Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Se supone que tuvieron una función ritual vinculada con la astronomía.

Se dice que debieron utilizar cuerdas y estacas para no desviarse del
trazo de las cerca de 1000 rectas. El clima seco de la zona, donde prácticamente nunca llueve,
permitió preservar su obra. El aire funciona como un "colchón" que
impide que las líneas se borren porque obliga al viento a cambiar su
dirección.

El primer grupo es figurativo y representa animales, aves, insectos, plantas, figuras fantásticas e incluso objetos de uso cotidiano. En el segundo están las líneas generalmente rectas y entrecruzadas en todas las direcciones. Algunas se extienden a lo largo de varios kilómetros y representas figuras geométricas. Hay otras denominadas sendas que parecen trazadas para poder acomodar grandes cantidades de personas.

- En la entrega Indiana Jones y el Reino de la Calavera de Cristal, se nombran como punto de partida para encontrar la ficticia ciudad de Akator. En la escena del viaje a Perú de dicha película aparecen las líneas, filmadas para la realización de ésta.

Curiosities:
- The Swiss writer Erich von Däniken those made famous by his book "Memories of the Future" in 1968. He considered it a proof that the man had recieved in Antiquity an alien visit that had influenced in the history. The idea obviously was soon disproved.
- In the Pokemon video games series, Pokemon Sigilyph shape, of the 5th generation, reminds one of the images in the Nazca lines.

Cómo llegar: Los vuelos sobre las líneas de Nazca despegan desde Nazca. Hay autobuses a dicha población desde Lima y Arequipa.
