En el pasado, fue ya un importante centro administrativo romano. Hoy en día, es el principal centro religioso de Inglaterra, pues es la sede del arzobispado anglicano de Canterbury. Aunque la Catedral es lo más importante del pueblo, es indispensable pasearse por su calle principal, Mercery Lane, impregnada de un ambiente medieval. También, se puede visitar la Abadía de San Agustín, pero no merece la pena ya que actualmente es un colegio y no se puede visitar.
