Cementerio nacional de Arlington, Virgina (EEUU) // Arlington national cemetery, Virginia (U.S.)

Este famoso cementerio militar, de 247 Ha de terreno accidentado, se encuentra en Arlington en las proximidades del Pentágono, cruzando el río Potomac desde el D.C. y en su día perteneció a Washington hasta que regresó a manos de Virginia en 1847.

En este sombrío e inmenso lugar descansan más de 300.000 militares y sus familiares, con veteranos de todas las guerras de EEUU, desde la Guerra de la Independecia hasta Iraq y Afganistán.

Las tierras donde se asienta el cementerio pertenecieron a Robert. E. Lee y su esposa Mary Anna Custis Lee, descendiente de Martha Washington.  Robert E.Lee fue un gran militar.


Cuando acabó de liderar el ejército de Virginia, las tropas de la Unión confiscaron la propiedad para enterrar a sus muertos, y ahí comenzó la costumbre de enterrar militares allí.

Entre las tumbas que destacan está  "la tumba de los desconocidos" o la "tumba al soldado desconocido" (más conocida con éste último). Es uno de los sitios más visitados. La tumba tiene guardia permanente las 24 horas del día todos los días del año, y éste se mueve de un lado a otro de la tumba con los típicos pasos militares.

La tumba del presidente J.F.Kennedy es otra de las más visitadas. Se encuentra enterrado en una colina elevada junto a su esposa y algunos de sus hijos. Llama la atención porque no es igual a las del resto, se encuentra simplemente con unas placas en el suelo sus nombres y con una llama siempre encendida.  Eso sí, las tumbas están valladas para que nadie se ponga encima. Muy próximos a su tumba, se encuentran sus hermanos Robert F.Kennedy y Edward F. Kennedy, éste último enterrado hace poco. También está enterrado otro presidente, William Howard Taft, es curioso, porque nunca fue militar.

Hay varios memoriales y monumentos dentro de la ruta turística típica:

• el Memorial del transbordador espacial Challenger en honor a la tripulación del vuelo STS-51-L que el 28 de enero de 1986 murió durante el lanzamiento de su nave.
• el Memorial del transbordador Columbia el 1 de febrero de 2003.
• el Memorial a las víctimas del ataque terrorista del 11 de septiembre al Pentágono.
• el Memorial a las víctimas del vuelo 103 de Pan Ann.
• Museo de "Women in Military Service for America Memorial.

Dentro del cementerio hay un bus-tren turístico de alrededor de una hora y media que te va parando por las tumbas y memoriales más importantes, cuesta unos 30-35 dolares. No lo contratamos, si estáis en buena forma, podéis andar deprisa por las colinas y tenéis tiempo, es mejor ir por vuestra cuenta a partir del mapa, en caso, contrario contratarlo. Las zonas y memoriales importantes están muy bien señalizados.

Between the tombs that stand out there is " the tomb of the strangers " or the " tomb to the unknown soldier " (more known with the latter). It is one of the most visited sites. The tomb has permanent police officer 24 hours of the day every day of the year, and this one moves across of the tomb with the typical military steps.

The tomb of the president J.F.Kennedy is different of most visited. It is buried in a hill raised together with his wife and some of his children. It calls the attention because it is not equal to those of the rest, one finds simply with a few plates in the soil his names and with a flame always flushed. It yes, the tombs are fenced in order that nobody puts above. Very near his tomb, there are his brothers Robert F.Kennedy and Edward F. Kennedy, the latter buried is done by it little. Also it is buried another president, William Howard Taft, is curious, because it was never military.

There are several briefs and monuments inside the tourist typical route:

• The Brief of the spatial ferryboat Challenger in honor to the crew of the flight STS-51-L that on January 28, 1986 he died during the launch of his ship.
• The Brief of the ferryboat Columbia on February 1, 2003.
• The Brief to the victims of the terrorist assault of September 11 to the Pentagon.
• The Brief to the victims of the flight 103 of Bread Ann.

Inside the cemetery there is a tourist bus - train of about one hour and a half that is stopping you for the tombs and the most important briefs, costs approximately 30-35 dollars. We do not contract it, if you are in good form, you can walk fast for the hills and have time, it is better opposite goes for your account from the map, in case, to contract it. The zones and important briefs are very well put up signs.

Cómo llegar: cogí un tour de un día que me llevaba también a otros sitios como el Monte Vernon. Me costó con la compañía Tour Mobile alrededor de unos 70-80 dólares. Mereció la pena porque yo estaba de escapa en Washington y hubiera sido un lío coger para sólo un día autobuses y taxis para ir de un sitio a otro.

How to come: I took a tour of one day that Vernon was taking to myself also to other sites as the Mount. It cost me with the company Tour Mobile about approximately 70-80 dollars. It was worth it because I was of it escapes in Washington and it had been a mess to take for only one day buses and taxis to go from a site to other one.
